'Glamour that's good for you' - Event review

Miranda Bond's personal journey to toxic free living
Miranda_2.jpgMiranda Bond struggled with endometriosis for many years and in her mid 30s, she resigned herself to the fact that she may not conceive naturally.  She then came upon a book called The Hormone Heresy, written by Dr. Sherrill Sellman.  The book suggested that women, like Miranda, could restore balance to their endocrine systems by doing the following 3 things:
  1. Changing their diet to an anti-inflammatory and organic diet
  2. Eliminating products that contain potentially harmful chemicals, particularly endocrine disrupting chemicals (found in makeup, nail polish & household cleaners), and
  3. Using natural progesterone cream prescribed by a doctor
Figuring she had nothing to lose, Miranda followed these guidelines, which included throwing away all of her makeup and within 3 months she was pregnant!  Following the birth of her daughter, Lola in 2002, Miranda's endometriosis cleared up completely, after years of being told by doctors that there was no solution other than surgery.  Amazed by these results and feeling a completely different person, Miranda decided to focus her life on educating and empowering women to take control of their health by limiting the toxins they put into their bodies and by seeking out natural options wherever possible.  Miranda and friend Jenni Williams, started a website Thriving Healthy Women www.thrivinghealthywomen.com.au to provide information and resources on women's health and toxic free living.

After being bombarded by emails from women all over the world searching for an all-natural cosmetics brand, Miranda and Jenni decided to create their own.  The result was INIKA, a stylish and exclusively natural range of makeup products.  Miranda and Jenni believed that women wanting to use natural cosmetics should not have to compromise on quality, colour or performance.  "Women everywhere are recognising that they no longer have to choose between makeup that works and makeup that is free from harmful ingredients that can affect both their health and the environment" says Miranda.  Available in a range of colours not been seen before in natural makeup, INIKA cosmetics are one of the only makeup brands to have all products vegan or certified organic or both.

Miranda's top ten toxins to avoid hiding in your bathroom cupboard
  1. Aluminium - Is an ingredient usually used in anti-perspirant.  It has been identified as a neurotoxin, which can interfere with many chemical reactions in the brain.

  2. Diethanolamine (DEA), Cocamide DEA, Lauramide DEA - Is a colourless liquid or crystalline alcohol that is used as a solvent, emulsifier and detergent.  DEA works as an emollient or humectants in skin softening lotions or personal care items, meaning it attracts moisture.  When found in products containing nitrates, it reacts chemically to form potentially carcinogenic nitrosamines.  DEA is readily absorbed through the skin, and accumulates in organs such as the brain.  It is a skin and eye irritant.

  3. Fluoride - Is found in toothpaste and dental care products.  It is a poison to humans when ingested over long periods, as it accumulates in body tissue.  Fluoride is a known carcinogen and is not approved by the FDA in the US.

  4. Formaldehyde - Is found in shampoos, mascara, cream, makeup and nail products.  It is a toxic gas that is a strong skin irritant and a suspected human carcinogen.  When combined with water, it is used as a disinfectant, fixative or preservative.  It is used extensively in the building industry as a glue.

  5. Coal Tar - Is found in shampoo, toothpaste, dyes, cosmetics, lipstick and hand and body lotion.  It is a known carcinogen and exposure can lead to increased risks of lung, scrotum and skin cancer.

  6. Propylene Glycol - Is a common ingredient used as a component of brake fluids, paint, varnishes and anti-freeze.  It is also in toothpaste, makeup, some baby wipes.  It is a petro-chemical solvent readily absorbed through the skin can scalp that accumulates in the heart, liver and kidneys, causing abnormalities and damaging the immune system.  It can damage cell membranes causing rashes, dry skin, contact dermatitis.

  7. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) - Is a foaming agent commonly found in personal care and cosmetic products.  It is also used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers.  It readily penetrates the skin and can cause a number of different health conditions.

  8. TALC - Is a very fine, powdered substance used in eye shadows, blushers and face powders.  It is chemically similar to asbestos (a known carcinogen), and like asbestos, can cause health problems.  It should never be used on babies because of its carcinogenicity and acute respiratory stress it can cause from inhalation.

  9. Toluene - A widely used solvant found in nail enamels, spray cans, hair gel, perfumes and fragrances, room deodorizers, body sprays etc.  It is suspected of being a trigger for asthma.  It is a suspected human carcinogen and can lead to adverse nervous system effects.

  10. PEG - Is used in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease as well as in cosmetics.  It adjusts the melting point and thickens products.  Its potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient can alter and reduce the skin's natural moisture factor.  This could increase the appearance of ageing and leave you more vulnerable to bacteria.  As part of the manufacturing process the toxic chemical 1,4-dioxane, a potent carcinogen, is generated.  On the label, they are identified by the prefix "PEG", "polyethylene", "polyethylene glycol", "polyoxyethylene", "-eth-", or "-oxynol"

Testimonals

Hi there, I just wanted to pass on my thanks to the Wellington Hardy's team and Miranda Bond for changing my life.  If it wasn't for my friend who bought me a ticket for a 'make up evening' I was reluctant to take time out for, I would never have changed my life.  I have rid all my toxic facial products (all bar 3 things - I am saving up to buy a few more Inika products).  My skin is already clearing, and I honestly love the way the Hardy's team managed to find the foundation colour to suit my skin perfectly.  Miranda's story was so inspirational and it is all true.  I felt so ashamed I was sucked in to the mainstream system of buying chemicals that poisoned my body and my life.  I personally would have like to thank Miranda for this life changing experience.  I am an Inika fan 100% and I will never be going back to mainstream products again (until Inika type products become mainstream!!!).  Thanks again, Nadine
