Are All Sunscreens Safe? New Zealand has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, which makes choosing a good sunscreen of the upmost importance. At Hardy’s we’ve done extensive research to find the best product to properly protect both the skin and the long-term health of our customers as we believe not all sunscreens are safe. When choosing a sunscreen there are two things to consider: 1. Is the sunscreen going to properly protect my skin from the full spectrum of UV rays? 2. Does it contain ingredients that could have a detrimental effect to the health of my skin and body? What is UV? UV stands for ultra violet radiation. There are two main types of UV radiation and here’s an easy way to remember what each of them do: UVB (B = burning). This is a short wavelength and is responsible for sunburn or erythema (redness). UVA (A = ageing). This is a long wavelength and penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB. It is responsible for damaging elastin and collagen figures, causes premature ageing and skin cancer. Therefore, protection from UVA should be of paramount importance in preserving the health of your body. A sunscreen that is termed ‘board-spectrum’ will block a fairly good portion of UVA and UVB rays, which is really important. REMEMBER... It is important to get just a few minutes of sunlight on your bare skin (without sunscreen) daily to optimize your vitamin D levels. The amount of sunlight it takes to make enough vitamin D is always less than the amount that causes reddening or burning. When doing so try to avoid the main burn time between 11am and 3pm. Hardy’s recommend Oasis Sun SPF 30 Oasis Sun SPF 30 is made in NZ and has been specifically formulated for the extreme UV conditions experienced in our country. It effectively blocks the full spectrum of UVA and UVB rays. In fact, it’s used by climbers in the Himalayas and around the world as their preferred protection. Sensitive Skin Oasis Sun SPF 30 has been formulated with sensitive skin in mind. All the unnecessary ingredients that are found in many sunscreens have been removed. Artificial colours, fragrances and viscosity enhancers are not contained in Oasis Sun, making it perfect for children and people with sensitive skin. Oasis Sun is also paraben free. Instead a Biogro-approved preservative is used. Designed for the Kiwi lifestyle As New Zealanders spend a lot of time outdoors, other ingredients such as non-GMO natural vitamin E, certified organic jojoba oil, soya lecithin and shea butter are added to protect the skin from the drying effects of wind and water. And even though Oasis Sun is non-whitening on the skin, the good news is it doesn’t contain nano-particles. It is also non-greasy which gets a big tick from the guys! How can I maximise the protection factor To get the best protection from your sunscreen, apply a thick layer onto the skin then allow 10-15 minutes for the product to bond before going outside. It’s a bit like putting a wetsuit on. It takes time to get into one, but once you’re in, you’re fully protected! Pop in and try for yourself Next time you are in-store, come and try Oasis Sun SPF 30 for yourself. All stores have a tester available that you can use. This is also a good way for people with sensitive skin to patch test it first to see how they go. ![]() Oasis Sun SFF 30
