A recent study headed by Dr. Joerg Gruenwald from Germany, supported the claim that using both glucosamine and omega 3s to treat osteoarthritis was superior to glucosamine alone.
The study involved 177 people with moderate to severe hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. For 26 weeks, half the participants took a glucosamine-only supplement (1500 milligrams per day), while the other half took a combined glucosamine/omega 3 supplement (1500 milligrams of glucosamine plus 444 mg of fish oil, half of which was pure omega 3).
After 26 weeks, both groups reported reduced pain and stiffness, but the percentage of people reporting improvements was higher in the glucosamine/omega 3 group. The combination product reduced morning stiffness and pain in the hips and knees by between 48.5 and 55.6 percent, compared to 41.7 to 55.3 percent in the glucosamine only group.
It was suggested that the two ingredients acted synergistically. Omega 3s prevent inflammation and glucosamine helps to rebuild lost cartilage.
