Secrets to anti-ageing

1. Improve your diet by eating ‘superfoods’ everyday
‘Superfood’ is a term used to describe food with very high nutritional content and potential health-promoting properties. Here are some examples of superfoods: Blueberries, blackcurrants, broccoli, soy beans, oily fish, oats, beans, yoghurt, garlic, brazil nuts, avocados and bananas.

2. Boost your immune system
Most of the health problems that lead to serious illness are associated with weak or poor immune system. The immune system is a network of special cells, tissues and organs that work together to defend the body against microbes-tiny organisms such as bacteria, parasites and fungi that can cause infections. To boost your immune system ensure you get adequate sleep, keep stress levels low and eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. Supplements that support the immune system include Ester C, Garlic, Probiotics, Zinc and Systemwell.

3. Maintain a healthy digestive system
Digestive enzymes play a vital role in our health and longevity. Digestive enzymes are essential for maintaining normal digestive function, because they are used to break down food, releasing important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and macronutrients for use in the body. Unfortunately, the body’s level of digestive enzymes can become easily depleted due to everyday stresses, poor eating habits, fast-paced lifestyles, aging or injury. Here are some tips to maintain a healthy digestive system: Include plenty of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables in your diet, take a good quality probiotic supplement to replenish the ‘friendly’ bacteria in your digestive system and avoid processed, refined foods.

4. Reduce free radicals with antioxidants
Your body is being constantly attacked by very harmful substances known as free radicals. You cannot see them, smell them or touch them, but they are always there, trying to destroy your cells, tissues and organs. They can come from outside sources, such as environmental pollution, smoking and various synthetic chemicals that are added to our water and food. Antioxidants are natural free radical fighters. They work by protecting the components of our antioxidant system. Common antioxidants include vitamins C, E, beta carotene, bioflavonoids, zinc, selenium and alpha lipoic acid.

5. Exercise
Regular aerobic exercise is a "must-do" for anyone committed to slowing the aging process. Hundreds of studies show that exercise combats the loss of stamina, muscle strength, balance, and bone density that increases with age.

6. Detox regularly
A detox program is a short-term diet that helps eliminate environmental and dietary toxins from your system to ensure we maintain good health. The skin is your largest organ and accounts for one quarter of your body`s detoxification process. Use a dry brush to remove dead skin cells and stimulate your lymphatic system before you shower or bathe. Dry-brushing even removes cellulite and tightens the skin. Eat raw foods and juices to deliver live enzymes and pure, powerful nutrients straight to your system. Live enzymes, which are killed when we cook or even steam food, optimize our metabolism, aid digestion and flush out toxins. Yoga helps lowering the levels of stress hormones and increasing insulin sensitivity. When you breathe deeply during the various poses, you process oxygen efficiently, burn fat and speed up your metabolism.

Throughout a detox avoid or limit consumption of caffeine, sugar, animal products, gluten and alcohol. By clearing toxins from your body, you will raise your energy levels, clear your complexion, stimulate digestion, and improve your all-around health and well-being.

7. Get adequate sleep
You can improve your health and create a better body for yourself by getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep is the time of the day when the body rebuilds, repairs and re energizes for the next day. The skin is the largest organ of the body and without the proper levels of sleep, it will also be the largest age-showing part of your life. At the surface of the skin are millions of cells that die off each day due to environmental influences, dry skin and sun damage. While lotions and cream may ease the effects of these factors, sleep is the only regenerative cycle that can truly undo the effects of the day. Without enough sleep, the skin will be unable to rebuild those dead and dying cells and this is when aging occurs.

8. If you smoke – stop
Smoking is the greatest preventable cause of death. If you want to live long and live healthy, avoid smoking at all costs. Smoking also damages your skin and appearance causing you to look older by giving you wrinkles, staining your teeth, breaking down your collagen and constricting your blood vessels and robbing your skin of nutrients.

9. Take care of your skin
Give your skin a break by refraining from using those scented lotions. Stop using ALL products that contain chemicals.. Use products that are paraben free. Parabens are the subject of extensive research worldwide and there is growing concern and evidence that they may be ‘endocrine disrupting chemicals’
