Zinc can be 'effective treatment' for common colds

The common cold is one of the most widespread illnesses and is a leading cause of visits to the doctor and absenteeism from school and work.  Adults catch between 2 to 4 colds a year and children up to 10 a year.

Experts believe taking zinc syrup, tablets or lozenges can lessen the severity and duration of the common cold.  A review of scientific evidence suggests taking zinc within a day of the onset of cold symptoms speeds recovery.  It may also help ward off colds, say the authors of the Cochrane Systematic Review, research that included data from 15 trials involving 1,360 people.  Zinc supplementation for at least five months reduces incidence of colds, school absenteeism and prescriptions of antibiotics for children with the common cold.
